The Hard Truth About Workplace Emergency Preparedness

The FBI has investigated active shooter cases across the United States for years. Their findings point to one consistent pattern: in most cases, warning signs existed before the attack. Employees noticed something. The obstacle was not awareness. It was not knowing what to do with it.

Run, Hide, Fight is a good starting point. The Department of Homeland Security developed it in partnership with ALERRT at Texas State University and it gives people a framework. But a poster on the wall and a video watched during onboarding are information — not training.

Training is what happens when a real law enforcement professional walks your team through actual scenarios, builds the right mindset, and makes sure every employee knows exactly what to do in the first 60 seconds of an active threat — when police are still minutes away.

That is exactly what JG Good Corp delivers.

What Does Corporate Active Shooter Training Actually Cover?

Each program presented by JG Good Corp focuses on you, your workplace, and your industry, not on some standardized training program. The training itself is based on four fundamental concepts: Awareness. Plan. Action. Care.

Awareness and Identification of Threats

People go through their workplace automatically. This program will train you to develop situational awareness skills such as knowing the exit points and understanding behaviors that do not belong.

Approach to Emergency Responses

In the event of an emergency, individuals react based on their conditioning. Panic, freeze, and waiting for others to do something are the natural responses of people who have not undergone training. This course focuses on the mental aspect of emergency response and develops the decision-making ability employees need in a matter of seconds.

Active Threat Protection

In this part, participants are trained on the basic protective actions during an active threat situation, options open to them based on their surroundings, and communication of important information to law enforcement upon arrival.

Life-Threatening Bleeding Response

This course, offered with our partner Downers Grove CPR Ltd., includes training on the principles of Stop the Bleed, an initiative created by the American College of Surgeons. The idea is for your staff to understand what constitutes a life-threatening case of bleeding and what to do during those crucial moments before medical help arrives.

Awareness of Emergency Equipment and Resources

Do your staff members know the locations of your bleeding control resources? And do they know how to use them? This module makes sure your team is familiar with what kind of resources are available at your facility and how to use them.

Coordination With Law Enforcement

How do you interact with law enforcement when they arrive? How do you communicate? What information do they require? This module is about the coordination between the employee response and the professional emergency response – something few organizations train for.

Who Needs This Training

If any of these apply to your organization, it needs this training right away:

Industries We Serve

Corporate Offices and Professional Services

Open and accessible locations with heavy traffic from clients, vendors, and visitors leave the company exposed to risks that few office managers contemplate until there is an actual incident.

Manufacturing and Industrial Facilities

With large floor spaces, several access points, and employees working in shifts, emergency planning is even more difficult.

Warehouses and Distribution Centers

With high employee turnover and poor security systems, most warehouse employees do not have any experience with active threat training.

Healthcare and Senior-Care Facilities

Patient-to-staff violence is one of the fastest-growing types of workplace violence in the country. Healthcare employees are at risk from situations that most training programs cannot deal with.

Schools and Educational Institutions

From private schools to colleges and trade schools, all educational institutions carry one of the largest responsibilities for emergency preparedness.

Businesses and Retail Stores

Businesses with publicly accessible spaces can’t know who walks through the door. The people who interface with customers on a day-to-day basis are on the front line of possible dangerous situations.

Property Management Organizations

Managing several buildings in several locations means your disaster preparedness plan must be effective within the context of different layouts, different tenant types, and different risks.

Houses of Worship

Acts of violence against churches, mosques, synagogues, and other places of worship have been on the rise recently. The congregation should have the same disaster preparedness plan as a business entity.

Community Organizations and Nonprofits

Community organizations usually cater to vulnerable communities and do not have any sort of formal disaster preparedness plan in place.

Municipal and Public-Sector Workplaces

Workplaces belonging to municipal or public sectors deal with people in distress; hence, they need an appropriate training program according to their environment.

Why Chicagoland Organizations Choose JG Good Corp Over a National Training Vendor

National training companies send a different facilitator every time. You get a standardized curriculum built for a general audience with no knowledge of your facility layout, your workforce, or the specific risks your industry faces.

JG Good Corp is based in Schaumburg. John Good spent 41 years in Illinois law enforcement. Every training session is led by the same certified professional your organization spoke to — someone who knows Chicagoland, has responded to real emergencies, and has spent four decades thinking about how people behave under threat.

The collaboration with Downers Grove CPR Ltd. adds a dedicated medical response component that most active shooter programs skip entirely. An active threat situation does not end when the threat stops. It ends when everyone who can be helped has been helped. Your employees need to know what to do in both phases.

John Good spent 41 years serving with two Illinois police departments before founding JG Good Corp. During his career he created the Officer Friendly and Crime Prevention position with the Glenview Police Department — one of the first community crime prevention programs of its kind in the region. He received the Glenview Public Safety Award in 1986 and was named Glenview Youth Services Person of the Year in 2001.

John has taught criminal justice and security as adjunct faculty at Roosevelt University, College of DuPage, Oakton College, and Northwestern Business College from 1990 to 2020, where he was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 2006. He holds undergraduate and graduate degrees in Law Enforcement Administration from Western Illinois University.

When your employees train with JG Good Corp, they are learning from someone who has responded to real emergencies under real pressure — not a facilitator who studied it from a manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is corporate active shooter training legally required?

No single federal law mandates this training, but OSHA’s general duty clause dictates that the employer needs to address recognized workplace dangers, which include active shooter preparedness training. In addition, liability is much higher for organizations that have not done their due diligence on training. There are many industries and states that dictate further obligations. We recommend consulting legal counsel about your specific situation.

How is this different from just watching a Run Hide Fight video?

A video makes people aware of the danger. Training enables them to act. JG Good Corp utilizes scenario-based training, discussion of facilities, and practical training elements, enabling employees to have the skills that a video training cannot provide.

Do you come to our facility?

Yes. All training is delivered on-site at your location in Schaumburg, Glenview, Lake Forest, or anywhere in the Chicagoland area. Training in your actual environment is more effective than training in a generic classroom.

How long does training take?

Session length depends on your organization’s size, needs, and the modules included. Half-day and full-day formats are available. Contact us and we will recommend the right format for your team.

What if we need training scheduled quickly?

Call us directly at (224) 763-0843. We will discuss your timeline and tell you exactly what we can do and when.

Do you provide tabletop exercises?

Yes. Tabletop exercises run through a realistic emergency scenario for your leadership team and safety group, assess your existing procedures, and highlight any weaknesses that exist without waiting for an actual situation to bring these to light. It can be run as a separate session or included in a comprehensive training package.

How often should organizations repeat this training?

CISA and other workplace safety professionals say that active shooter training should be repeated at least annually and whenever there is significant turnover in the organization or a change to your facility design. We can help you establish such a schedule.
